Many Airmen on base know Capt. William Mullins as the base chaplain. However, there was a time when he was not known for being the 911th Airlift Wing's chaplain.

In 1994 at the age of 18, Mullins enlisted in the Air Force as a non-destructive inspection technician. After spending four years active duty, he transferred into the Ohio Air National Guard, where he spent another seven years as an NDI technician.

At this time, Mullins made the decision to make a military career change and become a chaplain in the Air Force Reserve.

"I wanted to serve in the church," said Capt. William Mullins, 911th Airlift Wing, deputy wing chaplain. "I felt a call to be a pastor and a preacher and still wanted to serve in the military, so I was able to do what I did in the civilian world and transfer that to the military."

Currently outside of the military, Mullins is the chaplain of Muskingum University, located in New Concord, Ohio. As the University Chaplain, he holds a weekly chapel service, counsels students, and instructs classes such as Introduction to Christian Theology.

His colleagues believe that his passion for helping others and serving others help make him a successful chaplain.

"Capt. Mullins is a great chaplain," said Senior Airman Amy Elkins, 911th AW chaplain's assistant. "He's always trying to make the chapel a more inviting atmosphere."

In fact, Mullins said that he feels honored to have the deep privilege to hear the stories from Airmen around the base both when they're in crisis and when they're in joy and then trusting him not to share those stories not because they know him but because he is the chaplain.

"I think the greatest thing I enjoy about being a chaplain is being able to serve the Airmen of the wing," said Mullins.
