With spring fast approaching, motorcycles will soon be out of the garage and on the road. To help keep you safe, here are a few motorcycle safety items to remember.

There are 400,000 registered motorcyclists in Pennsylvania alone, and an average of 4,200 crashes reported annually, 200 of which are fatalities. Motorcycle safety is not just the responsibility of the rider, but also that of other drivers sharing the road.

As an operator of a motorcycle, there are a few key things you can do to help keep you safe on the road.

Practice and get acquainted with your motorcycle before hitting the road.

Participate in Motorcycle Safety Foundation Training. This is required for all military and
civilian members on base.

Ride around your neighborhood at slower speeds.

Wear protective equipment such as boots, helmet with face shield or goggles, gloves and reflective material that can easily been seen by other motorists.

Drive defensively!

Motorcycle training is a requirement every three years per AFI 91-207, and all members must take part.

The 911th Airlift Wing will hold a BasicRider Course 2, provided by the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program. If you are interested in participating, contact Senior Master Sgt. Jim Kelley, 911th AW ground safety supervisor, by phone or email. This will help determine how many classes need to be scheduled to accommodate all interested members.

To participate in the course you will need to bring your own motorcycle and have a valid motorcycle permit or license. Members holding a motorcycle permit may become licensed after attending the course.
