Flag Day 2012
A C-130H assigned to the 911th Airlift Wing, Pittsburgh, Pa. pays tribute to the men and who served during the Persian Gulf conflicts with painted aircraft nose art titled, 'Freedom isn't Free.' The U.S. flag is recognized as a symbol of freedom around the world. June 14th is historic because on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed an official resolution that the flag of the United States be 13 stripes alternate red and white; that the Union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. Then in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. Although not officially recognized as a Federal Holiday, on June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first (and only) U.S. state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday.
